The 5-Minute Fundraising Ask:

Build & Maintain your Mid-Level Donor Relationships through Quick, Authentic, and Successful Phone Conversations

Nonprofits are stumped about how to build and maintain mid-level donor relationships.

I teach non-profits to grow their Mid-Level donor relationships through quick, authentic, & successful phone conversations.

• Mid-Level Donors need more engagement than an email newsletter, but it’s not possible to take each of them out to lunch (there’s a reason for the “messy-middle nickname”!).

• Facing an enormous Mid-Level Donor goal can feel overwhelming, perplexing, and even impossible.

• On top of it all, building/maintaining Mid-Level Donor relationships is only ONE of the countless items on your to-do list.

I get it - you don’t have time to “re-invent the wheel” of Mid-Level Giving.

But chasing Mid-Level Donations doesn’t have to be an impossible task that sucks up all your time.

Instead, let’s “pick up the phone” and build Mid-Level relationships through candid & efficient 5-Minute phone conversations.

Secure Mid-Level Donations through Authentic Fundraising Conversations You Can Feel Good About

• Surpass your (loftiest) fundraising goals: Confidently make “shoot for the moon” fundraising Asks that are customized specifically to who YOU are as a fundraiser

• Right-size the time you spend fundraising: Quickly learn valuable new information about your donor base, while raising money with less effort

• Build a culture of relationship-driven philanthropy: Actively listen to your potential donors and cultivate authentic, curious, and confident fundraising

Start Crafting YOUR 5-Minute Fundraising Ask

I’m Kel Haney & I’ve spent 18+ years developing the

5-Minute Fundraising Ask Training Program

• I’ve personally made 20,000+ Fundraising Asks (over the phone!)

• I’ve trained hundreds of fundraisers at 50+ Non-Profit Organizations

• I’ve empowered fundraisers to raise +$16M (primarily in donations under $2K)

Here’s how we can work together:

5-Minute Fundraising Ask Training: for non-profits who want to guide their entire fundraising team (and/or entire staff/board) on how to “pick up the phone” and engage in their own 5-Minute Fundraising Asks with Mid-Level donors.

Retainer-based Training/Consulting/Coaching: for nonprofits who want to build a longer term, deeper, more strategic plan for building/maintaining Mid-Level donors.

Let's get the conversation started!
  • We’ve raised over $5 million through Asks made over the phone

Kel Haney built our phone call-based fundraising strategy at MCC Theater in February of 2015. Since then, we’ve raised over $5 million through asks made over the phone. In addition, almost 5,500 audience members have renewed or increased their involvement as patrons, subscribers, and donors or became first-time donors — all as a result of their interaction with our fundraising team via phone calls. We’ve integrated phone-based solicitation completely into our fundraising efforts. We’ve utilized Kel’s skill and knowledge of MCC to build our patron program. With Kel’s coaching and consulting at the center, we count on phone call-based Asks to raise over 50% of our total patron program contributions each year. We utilize phone calls in our capital campaign efforts, and they often play an early role in the cultivation process. In fact, one of our newest Board members became known to us after a gift that was solicited through a phone call.”

Blake West - Executive Director, MCC Theater

  • She works with the team at Donorly to deepen authentic human connections for our clients within their communities

"Kel has a joyous enthusiasm for serving the needs of nonprofits. She worked with the team at Donorly to deepen authentic human connections for our clients within their communities. These connections are the glue for mission-driven organizations and ensure that they have the support and participation they need for success."

    - Sandra Davis, President - Donorly

  • Kel was a huge asset in several years of outbound fundraising and in training & coaching our Individual Giving team for a major campaign

“Through our work with Kel, my team gained tools they didn’t even realize weren’t in their tool belts. We uncovered mindset challenges (primarily ‘fear of rejection’) that were holding team members back, and Kel gave us actionable steps to overcome them. Kel also helped us set specific campaign goals, strategized on all forms of donor communication (especially phone outreach), and consistently encouraged us to celebrate wins. Our team came away much more confident in all aspects of donor engagement. If you’re looking to boost the capacity and drive of your fundraising team, Kel’s training and coaching can help get you over the finish line.”

Mac Ingram (formerly the Director of Development at Signature Theatre; currently the Managing Director of Arts Nova)

  • This training & coaching is not something that student fundraisers need, it's what all fundraisers need

"We raised $80,000 more this year in revenue than we did last year. We contacted less people this year than we did last year and almost doubled our revenue… Kel’s been instrumental in me understanding fundraising - I feel overall empowered: this training & coaching is not something that student fundraisers need, it's what all fundraisers need. "

Katey Gunlefinger - Swann, University of Illinois Foundation - Engagement Center Manager

  • Learning to ask for $2,500 on the phone led me feeling comfortable to ask for a million dollars in person.

“We had several donors who’d been giving either $500 or $1,000 for several years and a letter was not going to move them up to $2,500 but calling them on the phone did…Learning to ask for $2,500 on the phone led me feeling comfortable to ask for a million dollars in person.”

Carter Tholl, Music Theater Wichita - Director of Development

  • We beat our annual fund goal by $23,000, and a lot of that was from phone calls.

“The thing that Kel Haney Consulting is doing differently than anything else we've experienced in the marketplace is that her training & coaching really do focus on relationships…We're training patrons to receive calls from us. We’re going to discuss gifts with them. We're paying attention to them and we’re paying attention to what they're giving…We beat our annual fund goal by $23,000, and a lot of that was from phone calls. I also feel like it has given us a little bit of swagger.”

Angela Cassette, Music Theater Wichita - Executive Director

  • Kel’s consulting was the solution that answered both of our biggest needs.

“When we had to halt in-person programming in 2020, we were at a loss for how to stay connected with our community and how to keep some revenue stream flowing. Kel’s consulting was the solution that answered both of our biggest needs. Since then, we’ve completed nine phone-based campaigns. We’ve seen increased engagement within our community of audiences, members, and donors. We’ve had a multitude of first time donors who were either one-time or long-time ticket buyers. We’ve had donors increase their annual giving two- and even three-fold, including a long-time mid-level donor who is now giving $10,000 annually. Kel’s training and consulting has been an incredible asset for our fundraising and community-building efforts. Her support has helped the organization as a whole become more comfortable with a community-centric fundraising model.”

Graeme Gillis - Co-Artistic Director, Ensemble Studio Theatre

Methodology

After spending twenty years as a theater director, I've developed a fundraising methodology that’s based on how I led a rehearsal room: focusing on what makes each of us unique and engaging. I empower artists, administrators, board members with the knowledge that they already possess the most critical tools needed to be skilled fundraisers: empathy, candor, vulnerability, enthusiasm, and storytelling.

Collaborations

I’ve collaborated with such organizations as MCC Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, Signature Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, New York Theatre Workshop, Classic Stage Company, Primary Stages, Ensemble Studio Theatre, The O’Neill Theater Center, Page 73 Productions, TDF, Berkshire Theatre Group, The New Group, The Glimmerglass Festival, Music Theatre Wichita, Marin Theatre Company, BroadwayUnlocked, American Composers Forum, The Mustard Seed (Canada), Undue Medical Debt, and The University of Illinois Foundation.
